Wurzburg Dog Park

Summertime brings more than just fun for the kids in our area, but our four-legged friends as well!  If you are new to the area or haven’t yet heard about the renovations that have been happening at Ambrose Park in Martinsburg, then you may not know that we have a beautiful dog park facility right here in the county.   The Wurzburg Dog Park is a member-based, secured facility that provides separate areas for both large and small dogs to run off-leash and get some exercise and interaction with other dogs.  Wurzburg Dog Park came to fruition thanks to the vision of Travis A. Hill, Jr. and his wife, Scarlett James Hill, advisors of the Wurzburg/Hill Family Fund with the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation and the generosity of Mr. Hill’s aunt, Miss Gretchen Wurzburg.  Miss Wurzburg had established the fund and after her passing in 2008 the Hill’s suggested that a portion of the fund be used to honor Miss Wurzburg’s memory and love of dogs by building a dog park in Berkeley County.

Ambrose Park was in need of an update and with new playground equipment and the Children’s Garden project being planned at the time, the location was perfect for the dog park to be added as well.  The facility, carefully and thoughtfully designed by the Hill’s, with its elaborate, large entrances and fenced sections also boasts multi-level water fountains for people and pets, covered seating areas and live video streaming.  As funds become available, there are plans to include lighting for safety and obstacle activities to further entertain the dogs.

Having Wurzburg Dog Parks as a membership-based facility was to not only help cover the maintenance and upkeep of the dog park itself, but by having the dogs registered we are able to ensure that all pets are up-to-date on their rabies (mandatory) and recommended vaccines as well as being registered with the county (copies of this documentation is required with the registration forms) for the safety and accountability of those that use it.  We provide each owner that registers a copy of the rules and regulations of the dog park to include ages of children allowed inside the fence, dog behavior expectations and reminding them of their responsibility to clean up after their dog; waste bags are even provided on-site.  Registration is done in our administrative office and is a flat $15 for the first dog, $5 for each additional dog (regardless of when the dog or dogs are registered) for the year.  You are given the information on accessing entry to the dog park and from the moment you sign-up, you have unlimited access to the facility.  Since we opened the dog park in November, registration has been steady and we fully expect it to be a popular spot for many of our local and neighboring residents and their canine friends!

If you wish to get more information about registering your dog or dogs for the Wurzburg Dog Park, you can visit our website at mbcparks-rec.org to view or download the registration form. We hope you will take advantage of the Wurzburg Dog Park and enjoy it for years to come!
